New Kid in (China)Town

May 10th, 2011 by  |  Published in Headline, Sydney Man  |  15 Comments

Long overlooked, downtown Sydney is home to the exotic, ever-so-tasty food, cheap clothes and curiousities galore. The perfect setting for someone who is new in town. Chinatown, can’t get you off my mind…

Our downtown hero is a wanderer. He’s a modern Wizard of Oz story…not meant to be here but he is. He can’t quite grasp Sydney winter, nor can we. Smells, colours and sights are so unfamiliar to him that they almost feel like home. In this strange paradoxical comfort Chinatown has it’s final effect. Wanderer’s wonder.

I love Chinatown and the fact that you’ve set a fashion story there. Great work guys!

I agree! The colors are great. I especially love the third shot.

The caucasian model in the ‘ethnic’ setting.
    Done, and kind of offensive.

Hi there B. In what way is it offensive? Can only Asians be in Chinatown? That is more offensive. Also fyi the stylist and creative mind behind the shoot is Asian as is the photographer. This editorial is about how beautiful the setting is, lets not ruin it by getting ugly in the comments. Thanks for your input x

Half of the images in this shoot aren’t even Chinatown specific - they could have been shot in any brightly lit metropolitan district, so I don’t see how this shoot is even accidentally offensive. Probably my favourite shoot on OntheSOS to date - beautifully lit, strong saturated colours, just gorgeous.

To my eyes, the model has a non-specific look which is perfect for this story. This is Sydney, a multicultural city, let’s celebrate it!

hi b. Pretty presumptuous of you to presume the model is Caucasian.

I really like the shoot, great fashion, timely jetsetting look in the model, and great capturing of the lights and colour. Really inspiring.

I would find it more offensive if it was a shoot of an asian model in chinatown. Because that’s clearly where they’d go, right??? Please. Your assumptions are what is offensive. There are plenty of caucasians and people of other ethnicities in Sydney’s chinatown. Maybe if you went down there and opened your eyes you’d realise that.

Caucasian as defined in its original meaning by the dicitonary of course.

Caucasian: “of or relating to one of the traditional divisions of humankind, covering a broad group of peoples from Europe, western Asia, and parts of India and North Africa.”
